Caroline Calway's practice pays direct homage to a trips taken into Western Australia and the Northern Territory. She finds inspiration from walking and camping within the National Parks and Outback Stations, being totally captivated by the immense, dramatic but yet fragile wilderness. Where every stone, leaf and tree has been shaped by each passing season. She was drawn to paint how nature manages to survive the harsh seasons by working and connecting together.

These interactions have had a huge impact on her journey as an artist.

Her paintings are direct views into this world. Depicting well known landmarks but in such a way as they feel hidden and intimate, devoid of all human interaction. The only signs of life are the vibrant green trees and leaves, the only sound is of the cascading water down the rocks. She aims to connect the viewer with the landscape through the use of a bold colour palette, thick gestural brushstrokes and layers of textures. These paintings reveal stories and memories that one imagines to be contained within these ancient landscapes
